DSL Setup Instructions

The following information should get you up and running with Montana.Net DSL. Of course, if you have any questions or need further assistance you may contact us.

System Requirements

  • Your Montana.Net DSL service must be active before you can configure your DSLGateway (Modem/Router).
  • Your computer must have a 10 Mbps or 10/100 Mbps Ethernet connection, or USB connection. (Note: USB connection to the Gateway is not supported for Microsoft Windows 95, Windos NT 4.0, and Mac OS.)
  • Your computer's operating system must be one of the following: Microsoft Windows 98SE, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Mac OS 7.1+, Mac OS 8.0+, Mac OS 9.0+, or Mac OS X+.
  • Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher, Netscape Navigator 4.0 or higher, or Opera 7 or higher.
  • TCP/IP network protocol installed on each computer to be connected to DSL.

Once you have satisfied the above requirements, your next step would be to plug the MicroFilters into each telephone jack to which a telephone is connected. The basic kit comes with one filter for use with a wall-mount telephone, and three filters for use with other devices. Note that the phone jack into which you will plug your Gateway can NOT have a filter on it.

Remember that ANY device connected to the phone system, including Answering Machines, Fax Machines, Satellite Systems, Security Alarm Systems and Automatic Water Meters, must have a MicroFilter connected to it.

Note: Some Security Alarm Systems or Automatic Water Meters may be "hard wired" into your telephone system which would require that your DSL installation be performed by a Qwest technician at extra charge.

After you have installed the MicroFilters on your phone jacks you are ready to hook up your Gateway. The Actiontec GT701-wg Gateway Modem/Router that is provided for your DSL service is connected as follows:

After connecting your Gateway and powering it on, start your computer and follow these steps:

  • Start your Browser program (ie. Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, etc.)
  • Type the following into the Address or Location field in the Browser window:
    http://192.168.0.1
  • Press Enter.
  • Your Browser should display the Actiontec Main Menu.
  • Click on the "Setup / Configuration" link.
  • In the Set Up / Configuration window, click on the "Advanced Setup" link.
  • In the Setup / Configuration click on the "Begin Advanced Setup" button.
  • In the Configuring the Advanced Settings window, make sure that the following conditions are met:
    • Your DSL Modem/Rounter ) is connected to your DSL line.
    • Your computer(s) are connected to your DSL Gateway.
  • Once these conditions are met, click the "Next" button.
  • In the WAN IP Address window, select "Obtain an IP Address through PPPoA", then click the "Next" button.
  • In the Broadband Connection via PPPoA window, place a check mark in the "PPP auto connect" checkbox.
  • Make sure the "VC-MUX" Encapsulation is selected.
  • Enter the User Name and Password that we will provide you in the appropriate fields.
  • Make sure that the "Static IP" field is empty. If anything is in that field, erase it.
  • Click"Save and Restart" in the lower left of the page.

Once your Gateway has finished its reset process, your DSL should be ready.

WARNING: Do not unplug the power cord from the Gateway during the Reset process, the Upgrade firmware process, or the Restore Default Settings process. Doing so may result in permanent damage to the Gateway.
